Pharrell Williams earns first UK number one with 'G I R L'

MUMBAI: 'Get Lucky' collaborator Pharrell Williams has claimed the number one spot on the UK chart with his latest album 'G I R L'. The album, which is Williams' second full-length solo record has become his very first UK number one. Only last week the album's lead single 'Happy' surpassed the million copies sales mark, giving the American singer/ songwriter his third single to sell million copies in the UK, in less than a year.

By taking the top spot on the UK chart, Williams has managed to knock over new comer- Bastille's debut album 'Bad Blood' to number three. Numbers revealed by Official Charts Company suggest that 'G I R L' has become 2014's fastest selling artiste album. Within the last week, the album sold a whopping 70,000 copies, beating previous record holder 'High Hopes' by veteran rocker Bruce Springsteen, which sold 48,000 copies in the first week of its launch earlier this January.

The 40 year old was recently in Adelaide at the Future Music festival where he performed a 30 minute set which several hits, including 'Hollaback' by Gwen Stefani, 'Hot in Herre' by Nelly and 'Blurred Lines' by Robin Thicke.

Meanwhile, in second place on the UK charts is English singer/ songwriter Ellie Goulding's 'Halcyon', with Swedish producer and DJ- Avicii's 'True' and going from number eight to number four. Wrapping up the top five spots is Arctic Monkey's 2013 release 'AM'.
