'The Monkees' heartthrob 'Davy Jones' passes away

MUMBAI: The diminutive heartthrob ‘Davy Jones’, who rocketed to the top of the 1960s music charts with the catchy refrains of The Monkees, passed away due to cardiac arrest on Wednesday. Early in the morning, Jones complained of breathing troubles and was taken to Martin Memorial South Hospital in Stuart, Florida where he was pronounced dead. The news was confirmed by the singer’s longtime publicist, Deborah Robicheau.

Warner Music launches premium online channel on YouTube

MUMBAI: Warner Music Group has recently unveiled plans for an online video channel ‘The Warner Sound’ on YouTube. The music company is the lone holdout among the major labels committed to VEVO. Gulzar to revive Jagjit Singh's magic in a music concert

Internet music radio and track play hours climb 50.5%: report

MUMBAI: Internet music radio and track play listening hours rose 50.5% in 2011 to over 1.3 billion monthly, while monetization initiatives (advertising and subscription) advanced 64.3%, according to a sector analytics report by AccuStream Research. MTV plans concerts for Titanic in its 100th year

MUMBAI: Marking the centenarian year of RMS Titanic’s maritime disaster, MTV international will pay homage to it martyrs with an outdoor concert on 14 April in Belfast. The network will orchestrate a night of live music and multi-act concert featuring over 200 performers as part of ‘Titanic Festival of Creative Arts 2012.’ The fest will be organized against the backdrop of city’s iconic Titanic Belfast tourist attraction.

Grammy takes away the Oscar

MUMBAI: For the first time since 1984, Grammy Awards has acquired more spectators than its age old competitor Oscar Awards. According to the Nielsen’s final ratings, the broadcast of Grammy Awards 2012 drew 39.9 million viewers for CBS network, whereas the 84th annual Academy Awards gained 39.34 million total viewers for ABC.

BBC World Service celebrates 80th year

MUMBAI: The BBC World Service radio station turned 80 on Wednesday. "The programmes will neither be very interesting nor very good," BBC chief John Reith had dismally predicted in 1932 as the World Service, then called the Empire Service, launched using short-wave radio technology. But 80 years on the BBC said it was determined to reach ever larger foreign audiences via television, radio and the Internet, announcing that BBC Persian TV had doubled its audience from 3.9 million weekly viewers in 2009 to nearly 7.2 million.
