Ilaiyaraaja, Monali Thakur, Varun Grover win National Awards

MUMBAI: Veteran composer Ilaiyaraaja has bagged the National Award yet again. This time the composer has been conferred the honour for Best Music Direction Background score for 'Tharai Thappattai' at the 63rd National Film Awards that have just been announced. Ilaiyaraaja had last won the National Award in 2010 for music direction for his work on Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja. In 1989, he had won the honour for his work on the film Rudraveena, in 1986 for Sindhu Bhairavi and in 1984 for Sagara Sangamam.

Ennu Ninte Moideen fetched M Jayachandran the National Award for Best Music Director this year. Among the playback singers, Mahesh Kale has been conferred with the Best Male Playback Singer award for his renditions in Marathi film Katyar Kaljaat Ghusli, while Monali Thakur walked away with the Best Female Playback Singer award for Moh Moh Ke Dhage from Hindi film Dum Laga Ke Haisha.

Varun Grover also won the Best Lyrics award for his work on Moh Moh Ke Dhage. Among the Special Awards, the Best Music award went to non feature film 'A Far Afternoon'.
