Music industry to converge at London Calling 2008

MUMBAI: London Calling, the annual gathering of businesses and senior executives from the music industry around the globe, will be held on 19 and 20 June 2008. Senior executives, artistes and allied industry representatives from over 40 countries, including USA, Japan, China, India and France are expected to participate.

UK youngsters ready to pay for music, says study

MUMBAI: According to a survey conducted by the University of Hertfordshire in the UK, people aged 14-24 finds that youngsters still love their music and are wiling to pay for it- but only on their own terms. What stands out in the result of the survey is that 80 percent of the users said they would pay for a "legal file-sharing service." Also the fact that legal download services does exist, that makes it easy to buy legitimate content right now.

US federal court okays re-selling of CD promos

MUMBAI: A US federal district court has ruled that selling promo CDs on eBay does not infringe copyright. The court ruled against Universal Music Group which had sued Troy Augusto, who regularly sells promo CDs on eBay. Universal claimed that music labeled "promotional use only" are the company's property and can never be resold or even thrown away and filed a copyright infringement lawsuit.

Saregama signs on underground artistes for 3 year contract

MUMBAI: Saregama India, which has launched The Underground Series, introducing 30 new talents across Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi, has signed on some of the artistes for a three year contract. It is for the first time that a major label is executing such a project at a large scale to promote artistes at the grass root level. The artistes who will cut an album with them are Parwati Kumari, Hamza Faruqui, Gaurav Issar from Mumbai and Jack Rabbit from Kolkata.

Big Music to launch Shibani Kashyap's new album

MUMBAI: Composer singer Shibani Kashyap will soon launch her fourth album under the Big Music label this September. Kashyap will get to retain a 40 per cent royalty share of the physical as well as the digital sales. The album has eight numbers, seven of which are composed and sung by Kashyap herself. The remaining one is a duet composed and song with disco king Bappi Lahiri. "The song composed by Bappida is a disco dance number and would create waves in the market."

Saregama India posts quarterly net profit of Rs 31.8 mn

MUMBAI: Saregama India has announced a net profit of Rs 31.80 million for the quarter ended March 2008, a drop of 26.22 per cent from the same quarter last year, when the company posted a standalone net profit of Rs 43.10 million. Net sales for the quarter climbed 37.13 per cent to Rs 392.60 million, while total income for the quarter rose 32.08 per cent to Rs 424.10 million, compared with the same period last year.
