Coupled with the proposed Copyright Bill, EMI deal comes at a fortunate time: Sony India

NEW DELHI: Sony Music Entertainment India has acquired British music company EMI's music publishing division, while Vivendi's Universal Music Group has won EMI's recorded music auction. A consortium led by Sony/ATV, a joint venture between Sony Corp and the Michael Jackson trust, is buying the music publishing division of EMI Group Ltd, for USD 2.2 billion. Universal Music Group is buying EMI's recording division for USD 1.9 billion.

Universal and Sony Music acquires EMI Group for $4.1 bn

MUMBAI: Universal Music and Sony Music have settled an agreement with Citigroup to acquire the rights of British record label EMI for combined $4.1 billion. The transaction would split EMI Group in two, with the recorded music unit traded to Universal for approximately $1.9 billion and the publishing divisions sold to Sony for $2.2 billion. Sony is considered as an investor and partial owner in the deal, but will manage the business under its Sony ATV publishing business, which administers the publishing rights of 750,000 songs, including the Beatles catalog.

Brian Roberts to succeed Steven Macri, named as CFO at Warner Music Group

MUMBAI: Warner Music Group Corp. (WMG) has announced that Brian Roberts will become the executive VP and chief financial officer with effect from 1 January, 2012. He will succeed Steven Macri who has been WMG's executive VP and CFO since 2008 and will remain in his position till the end of this year. Roberts will report to WMG CEO Stephen Cooper. Roberts currently serves as senior VP and CFO of Warner/Chappell Music, WMG's music publishing business, a position he's held since 2007.

Big FM posts operating profit of Rs 120.33 mn

MUMBAI: Big FM, the FM radio brand of Reliance Broadcast Network (RBNL), has reported operating profit for the third straight quarter, even as all other businesses of the company are bleeding. The radio broadcasting business reported an operating profit of Rs 120.33 million for the three-month period ended 30 September, as compared to an operating loss of Rs 22.14 million in the year ago period. Big FM's revenue jumped 48.02 per cent to Rs 571.01 million, as compared to Rs 388.4 million in the corresponding quarter of previous fiscal.

Govt announces International award in memory of Tagore

NEW DELHI: The Indian Government has instituted an international award in the memory of poet and novelist Rabindranath Tagore for promoting the values of universal brotherhood. The prize money of the award is Rs 10 million, the same for Gandhi Peace Prize and Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding. The award will be given to individuals, Associations, Institutions or Organizations and is open to all persons regardless of nationality, race, languages, caste, creed or gender.
