7 artists you should know about before heading to Supersonic's 4th edition

MUMBAI: When we have just one day to go for Supersonic, the super-people are already gearing up for the grand festival where headlining acts will be Eric Prydz (India debut), four times Grammy winner hip-hop artist Macklemore (India debut), and Grammy winner Zedd.

Vh1 Supersonic, kick starting from 10-12 February 2017 with a new home in Pune, will see many international and Indian artists who will rise above various international dance music genres like never before in Vh1 Supersonic.

What’s more? Well, apart from the headlining acts, you should know about these seven artists (also a little bit about their music), who are a part of the immaculate line-up.

Blot!

New Delhi-based multidisciplinary duo Gaurav Malaker and Avinash Kumar aka Blot! is known for its minimalistic techno and audiovisual sets. With their debut album Snafu (2013) the duo made a stylistic rise forward and they are amongst India’s foremost underground electronic music production outfits.

They play at least 100 gigs every year, while collaborating with several musicians and singers, they also co-founded their own interdisciplinary festival UnBox and an underground electronica label, Qilla Records. On the international front, they have performed at Cologne, Geneva, Berlin Music Week, Hamburg, Lyon, and London’s South Bank Centre. They got GQ Most Influential Indians awards in 2016, MyFav Artist of the Year and MyFav Best Techno DJ in 2016 and VH1 Sound Nation Best Electronic Act in 2014.

Joris Voorn

Co-owner of the Amsterdam-based labels Rejected (with Edwin Oosterwal) and Green, Joris Voorn is a Dutch DJ, who is best known for his own house-style, which is well thought-out to Detroit Techno. Joris Voorn's popularity exploded after releasing ‘Balance014’ compilation in 2009. Also, his ‘Dusty House Room’ EPs (2009) were a tremendous commercial success. Voorn was awarded Best Breakthrough at the annual Ibiza DJ Awards and climbed from 35th to 10th place in the Resident Advisor's DJ top 100 in 2009.

DJ Marky

Marco Antonio Silva aka DJ Marky, the Brazilian DJ who has more than 20 years of experience, is debuting in India at supersonic. He has absorbed the art of producing music to another level by his distinct drum and bass sound.

DJ Marky, who is the first DJ from Brazil to have a Top 15 hit in the UK charts, has his own festival called - DJ Marky & Friends Festival. In addition, he is the first ever-Brazilian DJ to have a residency at world-famous club - Fabric, London.

Protoculture

Trance and Progressive DJ Protoculture ranked South Africa’s number one DJ according to the DJ Mag Top 100 polls from 2011 to present. After completing audio engineering at age of 20, he immediately took the international psy-trance scene by storm. His international debut came at the United Kingdom’s famed Glastonbury Festival.

He is also a staple at Armin van Buuren's legendary A State of Trance World Tours. Protoculture's latest album ‘Music is More than Mathematics’ was released (2014) to critical acclaim, being cited by Beatsmedia UK as their Album of the Year and ranking fourth in Trance Podiums Top 10 Artist albums for 2014.

Curbi

The 18-year-old DJ is a gem that’s surely going to get things moving at Supersonic this year. Started in 2013, he has already signed with Spinnin' Records and MusicAllStars Management in mid 2015. His music has some distinct jumpy house rhythms along with typical raw bass lines. You cannot afford to miss his deep synth chords and drops creeping up on you during the breakdown. This is indeed big!

Quintino

Quinten van den Berg, best known as Quintino got famous for tracks like ‘Selecta’, ‘Go Hard’, Rap das Armas’, ‘Puzzle’ and more. Also, in 2016 he was named No. 32 in the Top 100 DJs list put out by DJ Magazine. Quintino was discovered by Dutch DJ Laidback Luke, and Luke decided to accompany the promising artist. Also, he has produced the anthem of Ultra Music Festival 2013 working together with DJ Tiesto and DJ Alvaro.

Paul Thomas

London based progressive house, techno, and trance DJ Paul Thomas is a pioneer signed to Armada and Toolroom's Zero Three. He has steadily established himself more recently as a leading name, and the small matter of 9 separate Beatport genre Top 10 successes.

In 2008 Paul’s precise studio schedule was hugely successful, and his significantly acclaimed remixes of Da Hool’s ‘Meet Her At The Love Parade’, Josh Wink’s ‘Higher State’, Deadmau5’s ‘Not Exactly’ and Sebastien Leger’s ‘Bad Clock’ being some of the highlights.

In its 4th edition, Vh1 Supersonic is inclined towards newer experiences and diverse musical genres hence, a transformation from EDM festival to a multi-genre international music festival.
