Kanye West sentenced to probation and community service in battery case

MUMBAI: Rapper Kanye West has been sentenced to two years probation after an altercation with a paparazzi photographer last July. The incident which happened outside Los Angeles Airport in 2013 lead to West being charged with misdemeanour battery and attempted grand theft. However, in a court hearing on Monday, West entered a no contest plea through his attorney. As the charge was only a misdemeanour, the rapper was absent from the hearing.

Reports state that while charges for attempted grand theft have been dismissed, the 'Yeezus' rapper has pleaded no contest to the misdemeanour battery charge. In addition to his two years of probation, the 36 year old rapper will also have to undergo 250 hours of community service and attend 24 sessions for anger management, along with compensating the victim.

There is hope that the conviction will be expunged from West's records. However, this will only be possible if he manages to stay away from legal trouble for the next two years.

Daniel Ramos, the photographer involved in the incident, is said to have told the judge that he wanted the rapper to be put behind bars. According to reports, Ramos said that he was only doing his job, and that West had broken the law. He also stated that if the tables were turned, he (Ramos) would have been thrown in jail.

West was involved in a similar incident in 2008, when he smashed a photographer's camera inside LAX and was arrested on felony vandalism charges. Earlier this year the 'Black Skinhead' rapper assaulted an 18 year old who used racial slur against West's reality star fiancée- Kim Kardashian. West, however, reached a civil settlement with the victim, enabling him to avoid criminal charges.
