Snehashish Mozumdar gives music for Indo Canadian thriller film

MUMBAI: World renowned Mandolin player Snehashish Mozumder's music is going to be part of an Indo Canadian film ‘Rock Paper Dice Enter' directed by Indo Canadian director Shreela Chakrabortty.

Chakrabortty, a close friend of Mozumder's, has used his music as part of the film's background scores. "Shreela is the director of the film. She helps publicise my music in Canada and US," said Mozumder. He further spoke about his music in the film. "I did not compose specifically for the film. She used some portions of my recorded album ‘East Meets West', which was recorded in London. It is a fusion album with Hindustani music and Jazz."

Speaking about the tone of the song, Mozumdar said, "The tune of the song is mellow and catchy. It has been used as part of the soundtrack for the film. She needed some Indian instruments to create a different kind of vibe to depict the situation. The thing with a mandolin is that it is a kind of instrument that gives a western feel but can completely change to Indian classical; and that is exactly what she wanted."

A master of mandolin in the Hindustani Classical style of music, Snehashish has released several albums and collaborated with various musicians to create tasteful fusions. Mozumder has performed many major festivals in the U.S.A, Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, and India like Sankat Mochan Utsav of Varanasi, Swami Haridas Sangeet Sanmelan of Mumbai, Indian Habitat Centre of Delhi, Bhowanipur Sangeeet Sanmelan, Gol Park Ramkrishna Mission of Kolkata and Saltlake Music Conference of Kolkata and others.

Over the next two years, Mozumder plans to focus on publicising his two and a half year old band ‘SOM' in India, making music for the next album and doing a big tour. "Two and a half years ago I started that band in Calcutta, since there is so much talent there. Once they were willing to travel and work with me, I started putting my energy into the band, which we are now going to publicise in Calcutta as well," he said.

The inventor of the double necked mandolin spends half the year living and working in New York and the other half in India. About his plans on making new music, Mozumder said, "SOM's debut album was released under Random Chance Records in New York. Now we have already started working on the second album, of which four songs have already been composed. I am planning a full-fledged tour for 2015, but nothing is decided yet. My main focus now is making an impact in India.

The artiste reminisces about his Bollywood days. "I used play in 1996 in the Mumbai film industry and have played for a lot of Bollywood films. One of the tracks I played for the film Border that became famous was ‘Sandese Aate Hain'. It was and remains a lovely tune."

'Rock Paper Dice Enter' tells the story of Tibet's struggle in form of a thriller and was inspired by the recent Edward Snowden incident. It will see Indo-Canadian actor-producer, Kash Gauni take the centre stage. The film explores the violation of human right to freedom of privacy. The film will release under the PVR Director's Rare on 7 February.
