AIR to get 2 MW DRM transmitters for Gujarat, W Bengal

MUMBAI: All India Radio (AIR) has placed an order for the supply of two 1000 kilowatt DRM capable medium wave transmitters. These will replace old analogue transmitters of same capacity at Chinsurah (West Bengal) and Rajkot (Gujarat), with state-of-the-art solid state transmitters. The new Megawatt transmitters can be operated in analogue, in simulcast or in DRM mode with automatic change-over between these three operational modes. The transmitters shall provide coverage to very large areas in the Indian sub-continent as well to the West, North, East and Southeast Asia.

ABU shortwave broadcasters support monitoring network

MUMBAI: The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) shortwave broadcasters' meeting in Kuala Lumpur on 2 Febuary, has renewed its support for the creation of a monitoring network to assess the reach and quality of their broadcasts. The backing came at a meeting of the Steering Committee of the ABU Shortwave Coordination Group, ABU-HFC. Over the past few years the committee has been looking into the development of a monitoring unit. Audio monitoring within the ABU-HFC would be a bilateral process, with ABU providing its support at no extra cost.

Rahman joins music royalty to record MJ's anthem

MUMBAI: Grammy award winning Indian musician A R Rahman has joined voices with some of the biggest names in the music industry like Celine Dion, Lionel Richie, Barbara Streisand and Kanye West to record a cover of Michael Jackson's peace anthem 'We Are The World'. The 44-year-old singer-composer who picked up two golden gramophones over the weekend, headed straight to the studio afterwards to record the song which will help raise money for the victims of the Haiti earthquake, along with 80 other artistes .

IPL looking to bring singer Akon to India

MUMBAI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is looking to have international music acts for the third edition of the event. On his Twitter account IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi reveals that they are trying to get Akon to India. He says that with his new album, the singer should be a hit in the country. This will probably be for the opening ceremony.

G V Prakash to compose for Shirish Kunder's Alien Sahib

MUMBAI: After a successful stint down South, composer G V Prakash is all set to make his mark on Bollywood. The young composer will score the music of Shirish Kunder's directorial debut Alien Sahib staring John Abraham. Contrary to media reports doing the rounds, the musician denied that he would be composing music for Farah Khan's Tees Mar Khan staring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif. "I am composing for Shirish's maiden directorial venture Alien Sahib and not Tees Maar Khan," he corrected. The composer will start working on the film from August this year.

UK's ad watchdog body bans 'offensive' radio ad

MUMBAI: British advertising watchdog, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), has banned a radio ad featuring a man speaking loudly in German and the voice over asking, "Is your boss a bit of a tyrant?" Thirteen complaints were filed for the ad for recruitment firm Reed which was banned by the ASA for using 'outdated stereotypes' and implying Germans were tyrants. It banned the ad for breaching rules on good taste and decency.

AIR employees join stir for repeal of Prasar Bharati Act

NEW DELHI: Employees of All India Radio and Doordarshan have resumed their agitation for repeal of the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Act 1990 on the ground that the experiment has proved financially unviable and the decision to treat employees in service (as on 5 October 2007) as deemed government employees will create different cadres.

Tanmoy Bose experiments with Baul music in new album

MUMBAI: Kolkata based tabla genius Pandit Tanmoy Bose, who has performed with the likes of Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan released his new album Baul N Beyond recently. The most interesting part of this album is that Bose explores one of the most native forms of music  Speaking about what drove him to this music, Bose says, "I could find a connection between Folk, Jazz, Indian classical music paired with the timeless philosophies of the Baul music. However, it's unfortunate that people are not aware of our indigenous genres."
