Meet Gafruddin, 'Jogiyaar Mahabharata' from Joginath community

MUMBAI: Meet Gafruddin, a folk musician from the Mewat region in India. He is the last upholder of the Jogi Nath community, a community that can perform the musical recitation called Pandu an ke Kadde a musical story telling of the Mahabharata. Pandu an means Pandavas and Kadde means couplets (dohas). In the 14th century, this narrative was penned down in the form of more than 2,500 dohas and this musical performance of Mahabharata began to be known as the Pandun Ke Kadde.

But today, only one man can perform these 2,500 couplets our very own last man standing Gafruddin.  Isn't it scary to think that the existence of an entire cultural tradition depends on only one man!

You can save this art form by helping Dinesh Yadav, a theatre director from Delhi. Dinesh has taken up the task of preserving this art form through his play Jogiyar Mahabharat, in which the narrative of Pandun Ke Kadde is performed.

So support his crowd funding campaign on Wish berry to save an entire art form and the families of local artistes that depend on it for a living. In exchange for your contribution, you'll get tickets to the performances.
