MUMBAI: Established big stars of pop music dazzled at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) held in New York on 25 August with Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars making their mark on stage and big wins.

Timberlake was the highlight of the evening as he took home top honour- ‘Video of the Year’ award for ‘Mirrors’ and the coveted MJ Video Vanguard Award for his contribution to pop music. Timberlake and his old band ‘N Sync raised the temperature by performing live a medley of their hits together.

Hip-hop artists Macklemore & Ryan Lewis took home three awards including Best Hip Hop award. Swift picked the Best Female Video for ‘I Knew You Were Trouble.’

Other winners, some of whom were announced before the evening broadcast from Brooklyn's Barclays Center, included Thirty Second to Mars's ‘Up In the Air’, for Best Rock video, Pink featuring Nate Ruess's ‘Just Give Me a Reason’, for Best Collaboration. Best choreography went to Bruno Mars for ‘Treasure’. Lady Gaga started the live ceremony with her new single ‘Applause’ in a colourful but sans controversy; Miley Cyrus performed her ‘We Can’t Stop’ and was joined by Robin Thicke. Kayne West sang ‘Blood On The Leaves’.

The video won over top hip-hop performers such as Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
