DJ A-Myth to remix tracks for '3 Idiots'

MUMBAI: DJs are often not considered as a part of the mainstream music but DJ A-Myth is here to make a difference. He decided to venture into the world of music as a DJ in 1994 without any formal training. I got into DJing 15 years back. I had little knowledge about the whole thing but I picked up the tricks of the trade over the years,... he says.

Apart from playing at various clubs and doing gigs all at several places he has also remixed tracks for more than dozen movies, his latest offering being â€?All The Best' for which he has remixed two tracks, â€?London Dreams' for which he has remixed three tracks and two tracks for â€?Main Aur Mrs.Khanna'. He is all geared up for Raju Hirani's Aamir Khan starrer â€?3 Idiots' on which he is currently working. I have just finished remixing one track in the album and would start working on another one soon...

A-Myth is also the only DJ to have worked with composer A R Rahman on his album Connections where he remixed the track Jiya Se Jiya'. I was asked to remix the track in a day. They had tried several other known DJs but finally they zeroed in on me after listening to my work....

Explaining about the current DJing scenario, he says, The picture now has changed and today it is better than what it was when I started. There is a lot of money and fame in this profession as well. Look at DJ Suketu or Akbar Sami who get paid handsomely and make good music. Even I started as a DJ doing gigs but now I am producing music as well....

Talking about the one point that distinguishes a good DJ from the herd of others, he opines, Everyone needs to have their own distinguished style and know the basics. Experience has also given me some technical expertise and know-how, it is necessary to understand the equipments completely. One should also know the crowd well and play the music. You can't play the same music everywhere....

On being quizzed about the remix trend that overtook the music industry few years ago, he says, I was also a part of the remix phenomenon and I didn't see anything wrong with it at all. It blended the old with the new in a way which appealed to the younger generation and made them recall the older melodies which otherwise wouldn't have passed their ears...

Having worked with several distinguished Bollywood composers like Rahman, Shankar Ehsaan Loy and Pritam, he says, Some music directors are least meddlesome when it comes to work. I am given my creative liberty to bring in my own element into the track. They are confident that I would do a fair job where as others give you certain parameters within which you have to work. They are very certain about the kind of sound they want....

The DJ has released a couple of albums earlier. Having burnt his fingers with a few of the albums, he adds candidly, It was only my first album which did well. The rest did not do a very good job. I was not actively involved with the rest of the albums and most of the work was outsourced to arrangers which could be one of the reasons for poor performance of the albums....

Currently I have 3 idiots on my plate apart from various gigs. I might also start working on my album next year in January. Though nothing is concrete as of now,... he concludes.
