Radio Mirchi Tamil Nadu hopes to resolve grievance of mestro Ilaiyaraaja

MUMBAI: Radio Mirchi's Tamil Nadu based stations have faced grievance from Padma Bhushan winner Ilaiyaraaja for broadcasting his work without his consent. The station was asked to take down the late night show 'Neenga, Naa, Raja Sir', which plays his songs.

The national awarding winning musician has made it clear through his letter that without his signed letter of consent, nobody should use his name, photograph and any of his compositions.

In an official statement released by Radio Mirchi, Tamil Nadu Radio Mirchi cluster head VP Shyam Tallamraju said, “Isaignani Illayaraja is one of the most revered music composers of our country. We at Radio Mirchi are proud to be associated with him and his music and hope to do so for years to come. We are keen to work with him; we are cognizant of the issue at hand and we hope to amicably resolve it to everyone’s mutual satisfaction'."

This comes on the back of a written petition sent to police officials by maestro Ilaiyaraaja, who urged officials to take action against those using his songs without his permission. In his statement, he said, "Through my fans it has been brought to my notice that record labels, radio stations and online pirates continue to make money of my music, despite an injunction passed by Madras High Court." He further said, "Hence, I have requested the director general of police (DGP), Chennai police commissioner and superintendent of police of all districts to take strict action in this regard."

Another station running a show based on the maestro is Radio City. The network launched a 91 days campaign titled, ‘Raja Rajathan’. The network is playing non-stop music by Ilaiyaraaja and it will conclude on the musician’s birthday- 2 June. On 21st March, Ilaiyaraaja’s official Facebook page posted, “Radio City 91.1 FM is broadcasting 24 hours Raja Sir's songs and planning for a Guinness Record for broadcasting songs of a single composer for 91.1 days. Let's celebrate this great moment.” (sic).

In March this year, he had issued an official letter asking all TV channels and Radio stations to contact him to get the required licenses to play his music. Ilaiyaraaja holds complete rights of his music.
