Samsung acquires cloud-based service provider 'mSpot'

MUMBAI: Samsung Electronics has acquired cloud-based content service provider ‘mSpot’, taking music and film streaming services to smart phones and tablet computers.

The acquisition will provide cloud-based entertainment experience of music, video and radio services for users of Samsung devices, while extending mSpot services globally. mSpot's entertainment services will be a key integrated offering on newly announced Samsung mobile devices.

According to reports, Samsung has purchased mSpot for an estimated price of $10 million. The acquisition will include the full scope of technology, assets and human resources under mSpot.

Samsung media solution center senior vice president TJ Kang said, “MSpot shares our vision to bring a best-in-class cloud and streaming entertainment experience to consumers and they've backed it up with great technical solutions."

Founded in 2004, mSpot offered services like music digital lockers on the Internet ‘cloud’ and online streaming of songs and films.

The company will face competition from Google and Amazon.com, which have already offered cloud-based online music storage and streaming services.
