EGOM reviewing FM Phase III auction issues

MUMBAI: With the government receiving strong criticism after the surprise debacle of the 2G auctions, the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGOM) is now reviewing the issues pertaining to the upcoming FM Phase III auctions that were not covered by the existing Cabinet decision or had risen during the implementation.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari said that issues being considered by the EGoM include the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) recommendation to reduce inter channel spacing to 400 KHZ from the present 800 KHz.

Other issues also include deviation in the request for proposal for the appointment of an e-auctioneer and the fee chargeable for migration of FM Phase II licenses to Phase III.

The move is stated to bring a breath of fresh air to radio broadcasters, who expressed concern after the 2G auctions that the FM phase III doesn’t meet with a similar fate.
