Bollywood EDM is soulless: Anish Sood

MUMBAI: Bollywood’s brand of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) is soulless and differs vastly with its indie counterpart in sound, application and musical philosophy, DJ Anish Sood has said.

Not mincing his words about the Bollywood EDM, he said, “Bollywood EDM music is popular with audiences as they just take a catchy EDM track and squeeze Hindi lyrics into it. It’s also EDM but it has nothing to do with us.” He believes that Bollywood churns out, is the mindless marriage between EDM and Hindi lyrics

At the age of 23, Sood is arguably one of the youngest DJs in the circuit, but has seven years of experience including gigs at Sunburn, NH7 Weekender and Invasion Festival.

“Most of the DJs in India are not into forming the Indian sound which is associated to Bollywood. I respect it (Bollywood music), but we get our inspiration from the international EDM feel and sound. As artistes, we love our own sound and are pushing towards international sound and not being subversive to Bollywood,” Sood told Radioandmusic.com.

Sood is currently promoting his new single with singer-TV personality Ramona ‘Hello World’ (9to5 Music label).

The duo will perform under the ‘Heineken Open Your World Tour’ across five cities- Delhi, Calcutta, Pune, Mumbai and Bangalore.

Sood is not only confident of EDM’s juggernaut in India but has experienced it firsthand. The dramatic rise of EDM in India is due to its higher energy level compared to Rock and Hip Hop which has attracted the huge 16-25 years generation.

“EDM has extended its reach beyond the big metros. You can say it’s in the right place at the right time. I did a Sunburn Reload tour across Tier II cities like Guwahati, Nagpur, Vizag, Vadodra and the response was great. The audience is educated and they have seen what an EDM show is like in the metros and they want to experience that. My show in Nagpur attracted 2,000 people,” he informed.

Moving to the new song he and Ramona are promoting Sood said that it was their second collaborative project.

The first was last year’s ‘Wanna Be Your Only Love’ which was released internationally. We worked for a month on this new song (which has already been released internationally last month. It went to No. 4 on iTunes). “I first had the track and Ramona then put the vocals on it. I then re-worked on the track. She is an easy person to work with and we both know what we wanted.”

Post Heineken Open Your World Tour, Sood will prepare for the European tour in October and the Sunburn Enchanted Valley in December. He is also working on a solo single.

“Being a DJ is an exciting career option. It’s satisfying to play to a bunch of strangers and financially rewarding if you are successful. But behind the scenes, it can be lonely and there’s lots of traveling. You always need to be creative and fresh,” he concluded.
