PM unveils Amjad Ali Khan's 'Sarod Symphony'

MUMBAI: The living legend and sarod maestro Ustaad Amjad Ali Khan is known for his ability to evoke moods through traditional Indian ragas on the sarod was in Delhi for the launch of his new album �Sarod Symphony'.

PTI revealed that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today released this musical album featuring the maestro his sons Aman and Ayan at his Parliament House office at a brief function attended by the trio. "This is a combined effort of me and my sons and a very talented young musician Stephen Devassy who has done the programming for the album. The album features sarod with european music. It is an effort to take sarod to the international market," Khan said.

The album, described as a neo-classical extravaganza, involves the melodious strains of the sarod played with an accompaniment of a full orchestra. It is an attempt to showcase the magnificence of both styles of music, while preserving the identity and purity of the Indian raga as well as the stately grandeur of Western classical music.

The album is unique in many ways as it was for the first time that Sarod would be heard in a very different space and flavour. It is also a message of unity, love and respect for each other. We respect European Classical Music. We do not look down upon any other genre," Khan revealed.

The sarod maestro remembered his father and guru Haafiz Ali Khan who underlined the importance of appreciating all forms of music. "This is what my father used to say. One can become a complete musician only when one can admire all the good points in other systems," Khan said.

The album comprises of seven tracks: World Village-Ragamala (Ragas - Shankara, Kamod, Mia Ki Malhar, Malkauns, Kedar, Anand Bhairo, Darbari Kanhara and Yaman), Sacred Imagination-Raga Behag, Earth Speaks-Raga Pilu, Silver Moonlight- Raga Jhinjhoti, Truth Begins- Raga Jaunpuri, Rainbow Flower- Ragamala (Ragas - Bihari, Bageshwari, Gujri Todi) and String Circle- Raga Kirwani 

'Sarod Symphony' is launched by Times Music to bring the listener face to face with the universality of the music of both - the ability to tap into the deep well of our emotions, the ability to evoke different moods and ambience, and the ability to bring us in communion with the Divine.
