Bronze sculpture of Amy Winehouse to be unveiled near Camden home

MUMBAI: To commemorate the memory of late jazz and blues singer- Amy Winehouse, a sculpture of her will be unveiled at the Stables Market in North London. The life size sculpture, designed by Scott Eaton- a London based artiste, will be made from brass and will be put up near the late singer's last home.

According to reports, the statue will include the Winehouse's trademark beehive hairdo and will be made public on 14 September, which would have been her 31st birthday. The original plan was to have the statue at the Camden Roundhouse.

Speaking about the planned memorial, the singer's father, Mitch Winehouse said, "The Roundhouse would have been great as Amy and the Foundation have a great affinity with the venue, but it would not always have been accessible for fans. We wanted people to be able to see it, touch and interact."

Terming it as a bittersweet moment, he stated that it would be a double edged sword as "they don't put statues up of people who are still with us."

"Now Amy will oversee the comings and goings of her home town forever. Amy was in love with Camden and it is the place her fans from all over the world associate her with. The family have always been keen to have a memorial for her in the place she loved the most, which will provide fans a place to visit and attract people to the area," he added.

Along with unveiling her sculpture, the memorial will offer information on donations towards the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which the singer's family set up to increase awareness on the effects of alcohol and drug misuse.

Last year, on what would have been the singer's 30th birthday, her hometown of Camden held events over a span of one month, during which the Jewish Museum paid tribute to her by holding a 10-week exhibition where fans could see photographs, records and clothes belonging to her.

The 'Back to Black' singer passed away from alcohol poisoning in her London home at the age of 27 years in 2011.
