Swipe Telecom-MTV confident on India market

MUMBAI: California Swipe Telecom and MTV which joined hands to launch a line of tablet and phablets products starting with the ‘MTV Volt’ in February, followed by ‘Volt 100’ reaffirmed its confidence in the market by launching the new MTV Slash phablets (retailing at Rs 9,440) here.

The partnership is targeting sales of 50-1,00,000 tablet and phablets devices in India over the next two years. It is currently growing at 50-60 per cent and targets to reach 300 crore for the current fiscal.

It also plans to maintain its leadership positions in Punjab, Rajasthan and Chandigarh along with extending its markets across the Western and Southern regions in the next two quarters.

Under the partnership, Swipe manufactures the devices and MTV provides the apps.

“If you consider annual profit share of Rs 6000-8000 per device, we are talking about 40-50 crore sales from the pure play partnership. We expect to get more than 20 per cent above our investment,” Swipe Telecom founder and CEO Shripal Gandhi told Radioandmusic.com.

Swipe Telecom is also looking at local partners to spread their reach among newer audiences and plan to invest almost $ 5-10 million for promotional activities.

“Currently, we are looking at inventory, as products like these get sold out very fast. We want to grow in an organised manner and not in a haphazard way. Content is one thing that we are planning to play with which will add value to the consumer. We are in talks with operators and content aggregators. By Diwali, we plan to provide a complete eco-system with the content, video and audio. We also plan to work closely with partners for subsidised tariff as this will make it a strong proposition,” he said.

Commenting on Swipe’s partnership with MTV, Gandhi said, “Earlier, there was company that MTV had partnered with but that was not for content. With us it is content and the engagement with us is too high. This adds significant value to the product.”

Following its India launch, Swipe will promote the product in neighbouring countries Nepal, Bangladesh and subsequently in Europe.
