Yahoo launches music fan pages

MUMBAI: Yahoo will offer free music-related aggregator pages starting from Tuesday in an attempt to attract fans looking for downloads, videos, tour dates, articles and other information.

The pages will be open for users to tinker with and customize — people can add connections to music sales sites like iTunes from Apple or Amazon as well as other sites like Oakland's Pandora or San Bruno's YouTube (owned by Yahoo nemesis Google Inc.).

It's turning each artist-information page into a more comprehensive portal, offering visitors the ability to play and buy songs, view photos and videos, find concerts, buy tickets and listen to webcasts featuring that act.

Later, Yahoo hopes to let bands and record labels set up their own artist pages for promotions.

In pitching the pages, Yahoo said that they'll bring together items from the fragmented online music world,... making it easier for people to find and buy what they are interested in.

The company did not say how it will make money off the service, but if it draws more people to its site, it will be more attractive to advertisers.

Yahoo has no trouble drawing music fans to its website -- more than 17 million in February, making it the top-ranked music site in Nielsen Online's index (although Nielsen's count doesn't include MySpace's music-related pages, which have a sizeable following).
