Sneha exits, Karsh Kale and Nucleya now Sound Trippin

MUMBAI: Chatting with Radioandmusic.com, Karsh Kale explained how his Sound Trippin experience was different from what he had done before. “It is really quite different. Previously I just had Dewarists to reference, since I was a part of it. But once I did the first episode, I could see what the core of the show was and what we were supposed to accomplish in five days, I realised that it is very different from that of Dewarists.”

MTV Sound Trippin, an original, homegrown format, conceptualised and owned by MTV, has stolen millions of hearts since its inception. It has become synonymous with being the most unique musical show on Indian television. Adding a new dimension to the second season of this interesting concept, MTV has passed on the baton to continue this journey of sound to song to none other than music biggies, Karsh Kale and Nucleya. The duo comes together to co-host HTC One Presents ‘MTV SOUND TRIPPIN SEASON 2’ from August 25, 2013, every Sunday at 8pm.

Sneha Khanwalkar, who enchanted the audience with the first outing of ‘MTV Sound Trippin’, also commenced the second season of this musical journey. As Season 1 dabbled with capturing sounds from different places that best represented them, season 2 turned the concept around where the show visited different places in search of one kind of sound. Taking the show’s legacy forward, both Karsh Kale and Nucleya will bring forth their fresh take in coming episodes of the season. Their pursuit for authentic sounds has taken them quite a few places, and revolve around themes such as Healing – Dharamshala, Monsoon – Shanti Niketan & Strength – Kerala.

The duo had quite a few praises to shower on the Sound Trippin pioneer. “Sneha is very talented and she has done a wonderful job with the first season,” said Udyan Sagar, brain child of Nucleya. “I have never worked with her or met her but I have been a great fan of the work that she has done in the film and the way she has been on Sound Trippin. I am always keepind an eye on what she is up to.” Kale added.

Kale’s most memorable experience thought the journey was rather an interesting one. “It was an extra-musical situation when we went to spend time with an elephant. We actually got to bathe and feed an elephant, which was a fort of break from the production work. I remember us going back to the studios feeling inspired having spent time feeding and bathing an elephant.”

Having never worked with Karsh Kale before, Udyan was incredibly excited when he was told about the opportunity. “When I was asked if I was interested, I was told that I would be working with Karsh. I felt ‘WOW, this is amazing’. I have always wanted to travel and meet new people, experience the nuances of different cultures. It was a dream come true. We recorded lots of untrained singers, something that we don’t usually get a chance to do. I have certainly learned a lot from Karsh and together we got to make really beautiful music.” Kale, not very unlike Udyan, was more than eager to do the show. “I think any kind of musical TV show that is focusing on music, for me is most exciting. It gives musicians a chance to show what we really do. Usually if we are travelling and doing this kind of thing, there are no cameras around us. It was a great opportunity to do what I usually do, in front of cameras and get involved with the themes that Sound Trippin wanted to explore.”

The whole premise of the show is having on board artists who do not quite have a particular style, yet are open enough to juggle and fuse genres, with versatility, to create music that is unique and original. It, then, comes as no surprise that Karsh and Udyan were selected to continue the journey that Sneha embarked on a year ago.

“The kind of tracks we collaborated on is different from each other in many ways. Where it was essential, there is a lot of electronic sounds used. The rest have very little,” informed Udyan. But surely they had some differences along the way. “I think if we had any kind of differences, they were dealt with immediately. More than anything, I think we understood each other’s strengths. At times he would take a back seat and allow me to do my thing because I think competition and arrangement are more of my forte, and I also have a bit more experience in this field of musical experimentation. Then, there is the production angle which I really enjoy, even though I have been doing it for over 20 years. But Udyan’s approach towards production is very fresh. So we quickly delegated responsibilities based on our strengths and weaknesses. So there was never really a problem because we needed to trust each other, and we did,” explained Kale.

Speaking about Karsh Kale and Nucleya coming together for MTV Sound Trippin, Aditya Swamy, EVP and Business Head, MTV India said, "We are constantly looking for format breakers. We were keep on presentingt Sound Trippin through a different lens. Having worked with Karsh before, we knew he loves to break away and do experimental stuff and teaming up with Nucleya means a whole new approach to the concept. They also connect with a very different set of music lovers and that will only grow the following for the show.”

Described by Billboard Magazine as a ‘visionary composer and producer’, Karsh Kale is one of the icons of global music. His body of work has helped an entire scene to emerge in the world of electronica and fusion music.  He was recently invited to perform at the White House where he was honored by US President Barack Obama, saying: “Karsh Kale, a musician who fuses the best of East and West, mixing eclectic beats with the sounds of his heritage and creating music that's distinctly his own.”On the other hand Nucleya (Udyan Sagar), is a bass heavy electronic artist. Over the last few years, Nucleya's carved a niche for himself in the country as one of the few electronic music producers that fuses bass music with Indian sounds.
