Pritam, Sonu, Rahman win MTV Video Music Awards

MUMBAI: Ace music composer Pritam added another feather in his crowded cap by bagging the best Bollywood Album for ‘Cocktail’ at the first edition of MTV Video Music Awards India (VMAI).

Other nominees in the category were Pritam (Barfi!), Amit Trivedi (Ishaqzaade), Sneha Khanwalkar (Gangs of Wasseypur 1) and Vishal- Shekhar (Student of the Year).

Finally, VMAI made its debut in India on 21 March in Mumbai. The musical extravaganza received tremendous response from the music and film industry.  With an enviable list of jury members and nominees, the awards night was a glittering affair and brought together some of the greatest names from the world of music under one roof.  

MTV India EVP and business head Aditya Swamy said, “The music fraternity has come out with whole hearted support for the VMA’s and this reflects in the massive amount of entries we have received.” The awards were presented across categories including film, independent, regional, digital and international.

Renowned singer Sonu Nigam won yet again for his popular song Abhi Mujhme Main Kahin from ‘Agneepath’, while best Bollywood Song Female was picked up by Shalmali Kholgade for Pareshaan from ‘Ishaqzaade’. Ayushmann Khurrana and Rochak Kohli won the best Bollywood Lyrics for Pani Da Rang from ‘Vicky Donor’.

The Disco song from ‘Student of the Year’ received the best Bollywood Video and AR Rahman won the best Indie Video for Infinite Love. Kailasa won the best Indie Band beating Indus creed, Advaita, The Ska Vengers and Swarathma. Kher said, “I am happy that the band has won. People have started knowing Kailasa and they have huge fan following.”

Yo Yo Honey Singh who entertained the crowd with his performance also bagged an award for best Indie Artiste Male for Brown Rang. Singh said, “I appreciate that people have honoured me with this award. It feels good that people praise me for my work.” Brown Rang will be the track that he would use to woo any girl, he added.

Sonu Kakkar won Indie Artiste Female for Mahi Bin and Late Shiv Batalvi received the best Indie Lyrics for the track Panchi Hojavan.

MTV also honoured Priyanka Chopra with a special achiever of the year award.

The award function was hosted by Imran Khan and Vir Das. The event witnessed interesting performances by artistes including 'Nautanki Saala' team Ayushmann Khurrana and Kunaal Roy Kapur, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma, maestro AR Rahman, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Indus Creed and RDB with T-pain.

Also present at the VMA’s were Anusha Dandekar, Jackky Bhagnani, Amit Sadh, Mika, Bappi Lahiri, Anu Malik, Kailash Kher, Jazzy B, Nikhil Chinapa, Leslie Lewis, Neeti Mohan, Sofia Hayat, Zarine Khan, Rajkumar Yadav, Prasoon Joshi and Abhijeet Sawant.
