Napster releases iPhone app for $10 a month

MUMBAI: Apple has a new approval process for apps, and among the first to come through is Napster. Napster, the grand-daddy of peer-to-peer file sharing, has brought its premium music service to mobile with an iPhone app.

It was put on pause about a year ago due to licensing fees being just a tad bit too high. But issues have been resolved. Now, Napster on iPhone will allow users to stream music over Wi-Fi or 3G, cache up to 100 tunes locally for when you're outside of coverage, arrange playlists, listen to Billboard charts all the way back to 1955, or give the Automix prediction engine a shot to discover new artists similar to what users like.

Other features include custom playlists, genius-like auto-mixing of your favorite song to create an instant playlist blending similar artists, and the ability to save your last hundred songs played so you can easily replay favorites.

The Napster service commands a ten million-strong song catalog, nearly matching the twelve million tracks offered on Apple's iTunes Store.

Naspter is a free download for iDevices running iPhone OS 3.0 or later. The software requires a $10 a month Napster plus Mobile Access subscription to work.

Napster was released Monday for Apple iOS devices, expanding the music service from PC and Mac, to a whole new slew of gadgets from the iPhone, iPod to the iPad.

As is often the case with mobile music services, Napster is only available in the US for now.
