Indian mobile handset sales touch 100mn units in 1H 2012: report

MUMBAI: Total shipments of mobile handsets in the country was recorded at 102.43 mn units during 1H 2012 (January-June 2012), according to CyberMedia Research's(CMR) India Mobile Handsets Market Review, 2Q 2012, September 2012 release.

As per the report, total India shipments of smart phones were 5.50 mn units during the same period.

In the handset division, Nokia led the race in the handset market with a total share of 22.2 per cent in the unit shipments followed by Samsung at 13 per cent and Micromax at 5.5 per cent.

In terms of unit shipments share during the six-month period ended June 2012 the leading smart phone OSs were Android (56.4 per cent), Symbian (17.4 per cent), BlackBerry (12.1 per cent), Bada (8.5 per cent), iOS (3.0 per cent) and Windows Mobile (2.6 per cent) on a base of 5.50 mn units.

The unit shipments growth in the mobile handsets market witnessed a growth rate of 12.2 per cent in smartphones and 16.9 per cent in feature phones, recording a total of 16.6 per cent in the 1H of the year.

The leading smartphone player (in terms of per cent of unit shipments) during the same period, was Samsung topping the board with a share of 41.6 per cent. Nokia falls in second spot with 19.2 per cent followed by BlackBerry maker RIM with 12.1 per cent share.

CyberMedia Research’s Telecoms Practice lead analyst Faisal Kawoosa said, “The first half of CY 2012 was witnessed to the high-decibel launch of Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X and more. The second half of CY 2012 continues to see the launch of a number of high value, aspirational smartphone models like the Nokia Lumia 910, Samsung Galaxy Note II and the Apple iPhone 5. This push from vendors and the increasing maturity of the Indian mobile subscriber community is expected to further push up smartphones as a proportion of total mobile handset shipments in the country in the next few quarters.”
