Dabangg 2 'Pandeyjee Seeti' runs in controversy

MUMBAI: After garnering immense popularity for its sequel, the popular song from Dabangg 2 ‘Pandeyjee Seeti’ has been embroiled in a copyright infringement case just a day before its release (21 December).

Apparently, a part of the song has been inspired from 1966 film Teesri Kasam’s track ‘Chalat Musafir’ composed by Shankar Jaikishen. Yesteryear lyricist and filmmaker Shailendra’s family has claimed that the music of ‘Pandeyjee Seeti’ has been copied from Shankar Jaikishen's creation without prior consent.

As per reports, daughter of the lyricist Priyanka Shaily Shailendra has alleged that no consent was taken from the family and acknowledgement should be given to Shailendra and Shankar Jaikishen. She has reportedly sent a legal notice to the producers and associates of the film.

The Dabangg 2 song has been composed by renowned composer duo Sajid-Wajid penned by Jalees Sherwani and rendered by Wajid Khan. The composers reportedly state that it’s a folk tune, so they didn’t buy the rights.

When contacted by Radioandmusic.com, one half of the composer duo Sajid Khan said, “This is a very trivial matter. We have not copied the song from anywhere. Our lawyer has filed the reply and we are not focusing on such issues now, instead are awaiting the response to the film and its music from the audience.”

Copyright infringement cases and regular cases of lifting content have become the norm in bollywood before the release of any big budget film. Many claim such matters are publicity stunts to create a buzz around the release of such films, which has already grabbed some eyeballs from audiences.

A similar case was reported earlier when days before the launch of Agent Vinod, composer Pritam Chakraborty was served a legal notice by an Iranian music band for alleged copyright violation of the song ‘Pungi’. The defense later withdrew the case.
