Singers vie for honours on TV

MUMBAI: The Indian music industry is getting ready to hog its share of the pop spotlight.

First, music composers turned overnight celebrities with television talent hunts. Now, singers will compete with each other for SMS honours on not one, but two television shows to launch shortly.

Sahara One has already announced its next `reality` celeb talent hunt, Jjhoom India. To launch by the end of October, the show produced by Optimystix India will have renowned singers teaming up with non singers, all pitted against each other. The judges will judge the performance of the non singer celeb participants, a reflection of the training given by the singer mentors.

Among the 10 `established singers` already pencilled in to participate on the show are Sudesh Bhosle, Vinod Rathod, Jatin (composer who is also a singer in his own right), Sanjivani Bhelande (a Sa Re Ga Ma Pa product), Akriti Kakkad, Zubin Garg, Suresh Wadkar and Parthiv Gohil (who makes his debut as a playback singer in Saawariya).

Now, news trickles in that soon to launch NDTV Imagine will also launch a similar show, albeit based on a different format, by mid November 2007. Tentatively titled Dhoom, the show will have known singers pitched against each other.

The names expected to participate in this show are Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan and Babul Supriyo, among others, but both channel officials and the singers are loathe to comment, since the contracts are yet to be formalised.

Meanwhile, Jjhoom India, which has been envisaged as a 12 week series, has been based on a Zodiac Television format, Stars on Stage, which has already been used in nine countries.

According to Optimystix director Vipul D Shah, each of the 10 singer and celeb pairs will perform as a duo, with the singer cast in a supporting role. Two of the three judge panel has been firmed up - veteran singer Asha Bhosale and composer Bappi Lahiri have been firmed up while the hunt for the third judge is still on. One celeb will get booted from the show each week. Among the celeb non singers participating in the show are mostly television personalities like Varun Badola, Shekhar Suman, Shweta Tiwari, Roshni Chopra, Shama Sikandar, Apara Mehta and Chhavi Mittal.

Meanwhile on 26 October, Star One will launch another `music reality` show which will catapult singer Adnan Sami into the host`s seat. The show is a lyrics based one, where participants need to know the lyrics of the song to be a winner. Reports say 36 episodes of the show have already been shot. Sami, who has lost an astounding 130 kgs and was seen recently in a slimmer, trimmer version as a celeb guest on Zee`s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge, will now occupy the anchor`s seat himself.
