Rolling Stones win NME awards after 50 years

MUMBAI: After enthralling audience for nearly 50 years, iconic British rock ‘n’ roll band Rolling Stones bagged trophies at the 2013 NME awards. The Rolling Stones emerged as double winners at the awards, more than half a century after the legendary English rock band was first featured in the magazine's pages.

The group picked up the ‘Best Live Band’ and the ‘Best Music Film’ trophies for their documentary ‘Crossfire Hurricane’. The awards were picked up by the band’s guitarist Ronnie Wood. The legendary British band recently celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2012 releasing their greatest hits album, a documentary film undertaking a mini tour in UK and US.

Another double winner at the ceremony was Florence Welch, of Florence and the Machine, who won ‘Best Solo Artist’ and ‘Best Dancefloor Anthem’ for ‘Sweet Nothing’ along with Calvin Harris.

Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, who recently released his debut solo album won the ‘Godlike Genius’ award. Past recipients of the honour include Noel Gallagher and Dave Grohl.

Other major award winners included Biffy Clyro (Best British band), The Maccabees for ‘Given to the Wild’ (Best album), The Killers (Best international band) and Foals for ‘Inhaler’ (Best track).

Special awards were also bestowed upon One Direction (Worst Band), singer Harry Styles (Villain of the Year), Olympics opening ceremony (Music moment of the year) and Barrack Obama (Hero of the year).

The ceremony was hosted by comedian Russell Kane, and witnessed performances by Biffy Clyro, Foals, Miles Kane and Paul Weller and the Cribs. Marr along with Wood and the Vaccines frontman Justin Young also performed.

The winners were selected on the basis of votes given by the readers of the NME magazine.
