Iconic anthem 'Mile Sur Mera Tumhara' back in new avatar

MUMBAI: There would hardly be an Indian who has not resonated with India's unofficial anthem 'Mile Sur Mera Tumhara' that was first promoted on Doordarshan in 1988.

After more than two decades, the iconic song has been revived as 'Phir Mile Sur' and will be revealed to the nation on 25 January 2010 in Mumbai. While the 1988 version of Mile Sur Mera Tumhara was created by the Lok Seva Sanchar Parishad, the new revived song has been produced by television channel Zoom from the Bennett, Coleman stable. Information and Broadcasting minister Ambika Soni will be unveiling the song on Monday, a day before India gets ready to celebrate it's 60th Republic Day.

According to sources, the new version of the popular song is composed by Louis Banks who had also composed the 1988 version of the song along with late P Vaidyanathan. According to sources, in this new song, Banks has worked with his son Gino. The new song will feature musicians like Shankar - Ehsaan -Loy, Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal, Mika, Bhojpuri singer Kalpana, among many other personalities from sports, arts, entertainment and music. The video has been directed by Kailash Surendranath, the original director of the 1988 version of Mile Sur Mera Tumhara.

For those who don't know, Mile Sur Mera Tumhara (1988) was written by Piyush Pandey (then a Accounts Manager, and now Chief of Oligvy and Mather, India). The conception of the project was by Suresh Mullick and recorded by a group of people from all walks of life, and featured in its video a supergroup of popular Indians - Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty, Jitendra, Mallika Sarabhai (Dancer), Mario Miranda (Cartoonist) Mrinal Sen (Filmmaker) Sunil Gangopadhyay, Annadashankar Ray (Author) Bhimsen Joshi, M Balamuralikrishna, Lata Mangeshkar, Suchitra Mitra (Singers) and sportspersons Narendra Hirwani, S Venkataraghavan, Prakash Padukone among many others.

It would be interesting to see if the new version will appeal to the citizens as much as the iconic 1988 anthem that focused on national integration and unity.
