HR min introduces Copyright amendment in Rajya Sabha

MUMBAI: The Copyright Amendment Bill 2010 was introduced in the Rajya Sabha by the Union government on Monday seeking amendments to the Copyright Act, 1957.

India will bring its copyright laws in line with international standards in internet and digital technology, providing for stringent punishment up to two years imprisonment for violation, a PTI report said.

In order to extend protection of copyright material in India over digital networks such as internet and other computer networks related to literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works, films and sound recordings, the existing Act is being amended to harmonise it with global treaties, Sibal said while introducing the amendment.

The changes are in conformity with the provisions of the World Intellectual Property Organisation's WIPO Copyright Treaty (WCT) and WIPO Performances and Phonograms Treaty (WPPT), he added.

Once the amendments are incorporated in the Act, it will also ensure that film song lyricists, composers and screenplay writers also get their rights on royalty, unlike now when they get just a one-time professional fee.
