Santoor player and Mohinyattam dancer creating new genre

MUMBAI: Kolkata-based Santoor player and a Mohinyattam dancer are trying to create a new genre of music and dance by blending electronic with ethnic music forms.

Talented classical dancer Mom Ganguly and Santoor player Kunal Saha have come up with ''Ishtara-The Genesis'' which has the characteristics of Mohinyattam, Kathak and Mayurbhanj Chhau creating a unique blend of music and dance that is contemporary yet traditional.

"The music used in Ishtara does not have a definite theme. The uniqueness lies in its capacity to make one groove to Indian classical music and feel the peace within, yet throb to the western beats in it," Ganguly said to PTI.

They have used Indian traditional instruments like Santoor and Idakka to juxtapose them with the sound of western classical orchestra and African beats giving it a contemporary feel.

Having already launched mobile phone caller tunes of ''Ishtara'', they would be ready with a video album in the next 3-4 months.

"We are getting fabulous response and are also lining up concerts all over India from September," the renowned danseuse said.

Conceived a year back by Ganguly with her Kaishiki Dance Troupe, Ishtara came into being with Kunal Saha and his band Blendz Adhikalp joining hands with his brand of ethnic-electronic music.
