MUMBAI: If you ever happen to enter Tihar Jail, you will encounter TJ FM 8.9 - a Tihar based radio station trying to spread joy and happiness among its inmates through its programming. The radio, which was recently inaugurated, is made accessible only in Tihar.

RJ Simran Kohli who was an RJ for more than 14 years, has been the driving force in setting up the studio in Jail. Speaking with Radioandmusic.com, Kohli shares her new role as Creative director and about her company 'CrunchnRoll'. She says, "I built the studio in Tihar Jail on my individual capacity through my company 'CrunchnRoll'. I plan to take up such individual projects which will help people set-up radio studios and Community radio stations." Kohli has been associated with Radio City's Breakfast Show for almost seven years, and will be moving out after 15 February.

Kohli will be creatively involved for a while with the station. Along with her team, she will also be imparting professional training to the inmates in a fully functional state-of-the-art Radio Studio that she has set up in the premises of Tihar. "I will give them lectures and training in batches of five or so. I got my own staff that helps in the technical training. I usually go twice a week to train them." Her journey with people in Tihar started two years ago as she was keen in spreading joy and happiness among the otherwise unhappy prisoners.

The station was inaugurated by Director General of prisons Vimla Mehra recently. The programming of the station will include songs and programs that touch the lives of the people. Over a period of time, Kohli also hoped to interview some personalities. The programmes will be aired from 9 am to 3 pm.

The studio was set-up in two weeks with professional equipment which was funded by the Jail. Kohli exclaims, "If you see our broadcast you will be shocked as the studio is the best quality studio. In the future, if they plan to convert it into community radio they will surely be able to do it."
