NEW DELHI: Although 2009 did not begin so well for private FM radio with the government adamant that it would not permit the broadcast of news and delayed the launch of the third phase of FM, the year ended on a somewhat brighter note. The shutting down of Worldspace Radio channels in India did prove a dampener at the end of '09, however.

Information and Broadcasting minister Ambika Soni told the World Economic Forum's India Economic Summit in November 2009 that a note was being finalised for the cabinet to recommend an increase in foreign direct investment limit and allowing Akashvani-sourced news on private FM radio channels....

MUMBAI: FM commercial stations took on the differentiation element seriously in 2009 by introducing variety in its music inventory. Breaking away from contemporary Bollywood clutter and embracing differential music seemed to be the mantra for many stations.

India Today group's radio venture Meow was the first stations to distance itself from contemporary music by introducing music from the 1990's till date. Around mid 2009, Radio Mirchi adopted retro melodies in its 23 Hindi speaking markets this year and some other stations followed suit by introducing retro music in different day parts. Radio One flagged off its 'challenge' of playing 13 songs in an hour, but later altered it towards the year end to make it '13 songs in an hour with no repetition during the day'. Their inventory now includes non-film music and Bollywood music right from 1980s to date. ...

MUMBAI: The music world saw an upheaval as some of the important names in the world of music bid good bye to us. As far as international music goes, one of the foremost names is Michael Jackson who passed away in June. Another stellar name of the pop music world, Stephen Gately of Boyzone bid adieu. The world of Indian classical music faced its biggest blow as two prominent names - Ustad Akbar Ali Khan and Gangubai Hangal, breathed their last. The world of rock music also faced a blow as guitar innovator Les Paul passed away of pneumonia complications and Lynryd Skynryd keyboardist Billy Powell suffered a heart attack in January 2009. The biggest shock to the Indian independent music came when Indian Ocean percussionist Asheem Chakravarthy breathed his last a few days ago. MUMBAI: Some of these events that caused ripples in the radio industry in India last year, involved people, some were policy changes and some were just developments that took their time happening.

1) Abraham Thomas bid adieu to Red FM

After nurturing Red FM from its inception the station's COO Abraham Thomas bid farewell to the station in November 2009. Abe, as he is known in the industry, took over Red FM when it ran just three stations in 2005, saw it climb to number one position, and oversaw its merger with sister brand SFM earlier in 2009, bringing with it its own 40 odd stations under the hugely popular Red FM brand. ...

Massakali (A R Rahman - Dilli 6)

There are no questions on why this song scores above any other songs else. A trademark Rahman composition, the song was on a perennial repeat on radio stations, music channels and caller back ring tones. Sung by former Silk Route member Mohit Chauhan, Rahman yet again proved that he can make silly invented words sound so hip!
