Radio still relevant, Technology is welcome: Lalit Pandit

MUMBAI: Radio has not lost its importance or relevance for the music industry. It is still very relevant in promoting new songs and artists even in the age of 24-hour television and ever expanding Internet age, music composer Lalit Pandit has said.

“I feel radio is pretty important in today’s world. People are moving about more and I see them listening to music on radios more than they watch television. The only ‘complaint’ I have is the rubbish talk that happens instead of the music. Instead of cracking jokes, I feel they should play music. I also wish radio stations would inform audiences about the composers or lyricists of the songs. When I listen to a song, I like to learn about the composer and his/ her style,” Pandit said.

Pandit who is currently completing the music of ‘Besharam’ directed by Abhinav Kashyap said that he was open to new technology, sounds and styles permeating the music industry.

“I play different instruments so that helps me on the technical aspects as a musician. I have (gathered) so much knowledge and experience that has helped me as a composer. I see my style as a futuristic composer who likes to blend melody with beats- with emphasis on melody.”

He welcomed new developments in the industry either in the form of new technology, sounds or styles as they increased a composer’s repertoire. “My music has always been futuristic. Take 'Munni Badnaam Hui' (Dabangg) which was technically ahead and the best recorded song yet.”

On his current project with Kashyap, Pandit said,“ I have been working on Besharam for the past six months and you can expect one of my best scores. We have recorded five songs and the situations (for the songs) are very good. There is an item number.”
