NCPA to host Indian, western musical acts

MUMBAI: After enthralling audience with the classical concert of renowned bollywood singer Shankar Mahadevan, NCPA is all set to host a bouquet of national and international performances throughout August.

The first performance will be a western music concert ‘A Master’s Touch –Festive concert by BP Salon Orchestra’, led by Nandkishore Talgaonkar and hosted by Khursheed Wadia on 19 August at Experimental Theatre. Conducted by Parvez Doctor, the orchestra will showcase a concert of classical, semi-classical and light music presented by artistes, soloists and choir.

Organized in association with BP Charitable Trust, the concert will feature marches, waltzes, violin solo by Raju Padhiyar, harmonica solos by Rustom Karwa, Sarosh Sanjana and Darius Engineer, seasonal medleys, junior items by students of Marilynne Chhabra and Parvez Doctor, and sing-along items featuring Lokhandwala Foundation School which will be led by Bakhtawar Gandhi. Over past five decades, The BP Salon Orchestra has provided platform for young talents to stage their abilities and has performed regularly in Mumbai and other cities.

Following the orchestral concert, NCPA will also host an Indian classical music act ‘Nad Ninad’ on 22 August at Godrej Theatre. The classical act will be a guided listening session celebrating the sesquicentennial birth anniversary of the Maihar gharana maestro Allauddin Khan ‘Baba’. Conducted by an accomplished bansuri player Nityanand Haldipur, the concert will present the archival recordings of the maestro’s music. 

Allauddin Khan ‘Baba’ instrumented Maihar gharana, by infusing dhrupad elements in to the performance techniques of instruments such as surbahar, sitar and sarod. During his lifetime, he composed many new ragas most popular amongst them are Hemant and Manj khamaj. 

NCPA will end the month with a western music concert on 26 August at Tata Theatre. The musical includes line-up of renowned artistes like Thomson Andrews, Ella Atai, Shahariyar Atai, Asif Ali Beg, Cyrus Broacha, DANCEWORX, Suzanne D’Mello, Samantha Edwards, Caralisa Monteiro, Marie Paul, Victor Rodrigues, Tara Sutaria, The Stop-Gaps  Choral Ensemble, The Stop-Gaps Junior Choral Ensemble and host of other instrumentalists and accompanists like Leon DeSouza and Beven Fonseca amongst others. The one-of-a-kind concert dedicated to animals and birds has been organized in association with the Stop-Gaps Cultural Academy.
