Indiavoting.com's campaign gets hip hop flavour to polls

MUMBAI: Edutainment site www.indiavoting.com has launched a hip hop song Math Socho Abhiyan, that encourages the youth of India to get their priorities straight and make it a point to cast their vote in the upcoming elections.

The song has been written, composed and sung by Ranjit Menon. The entire process took Ranjit and his troupe six days to complete.

Ranjit says that as the lyrics were written to appeal to the youth in general, many references to what the youth are into these days like FaceBook, IPL, popular hangouts and so on have been made

Ranjit explains that the basic idea behind composing the song was that he felt a lot of the youth today shy away from politics and don't really concern themselves with political issues. Ranjit says that they were initially thinking of launching a marketing campaign that would consist of a couple of thought provoking ads but then he and Ajay Sharma, the brain behind the campaign decided that an anthem of sorts would be more ideal and appealing for a larger audience.

Ranjit also reveals that he had first composed a blues version of the song but then decided that in order to engage a larger audience they would have to compose a catchy hip hop number as he felt that hip hop was a genre that more people related to

Ranjit Menon says that he is no newbie to singing and has always had a passion for it. He has done many radio spots and was in four rock bands back in college.

When asked about what the response for the song was so far, Ranjit says that he is amazed at how fast the song has become a rave and reveals that more than a thousand CDs have been given out on demand in the first week of the songs release. The website has got more than 100,000 visitors to the site already.

Ranjit says that in terms of promotion on radio, attaining slots has been a difficult feat for them but as it is election time they are expecting a positive outcome. He says that within a week Mat Socho is likely air on Radio Mirchi and hopes that other radio channels will follow suit.

A music video for the song featuring caricatures of politicians has also been compiled and will be seen on TV channels soon.

The song is available for download on www.indiavoting.com.
