MUMBAI: After debuting last year, Asia Voice of Independent Music Awards, popularly known as AVIMA awards, have included Pacific in their rooster. This year, the awards received representation from 20 countries, and India's indie artistes are not far behind 

Among those nominated for the Asia - Pacific Voice of Independent Music Awards are Sanjeev T and Rainbow Bridge, Demonic Resurrection, The Summerpint Junkie, Prayag, The Bicycle Days and Junkyard Groove 

Last year's winner Motherjane ('Best Rock Act) have lapped three nominations at AVIMA 2010     

An official statement released stated Malaysia, India, Indonesia, Brunei and Philippines are leading and clocking up nominations in the hip-hop and rock categories.  

AVIMA founder and Judge Siva Chandran said that going through 1500 songs sent by bands across Asia was tough 

It was sheer hell going through almost 1500 songs from across Asia, and I think my dreams will be colored psychedelic-indie for the next few weeks. But it was well worth the effort." 

The entries coming from indie artistes from the subcontinent have been quite varied says Chandran, "We see talents from Iran such as TarantisT and Maral, and adrenaline-pumped acts such as Go Chic from Taiwan, Galaxy 7 and Funky Gong from Japan, make the cut. We were pleasantly surprised by the sheer brit-pop exuberance of acts like The Standards from Thailand and Indonesia's The Aftermiles. It proves that there are plenty of indie acts bubbling under the layer of mainstream music, and AVIMA 2010 is the perfect launch platform for many.

About Indian acts, Chandran says, "Scanning through the nominee list, India have really dominated the rock categories and Malaysia with the hip-hop ones, but AVIMA has been known to pull out a few... rabbit in the hat... sort of winners."
