Swaminathan Selvaganesh shares his musical journey on Art And Artistes' 'Inner Voice' #7

MUMBAI:: Art And Artistes have released a video featuring the child prodigy Swaminathan Selvaganesh in the seventh webisode of their iconic web series 'Inner Voice'. Swaminathan Selvaganesh comes from a family of genius percussionists including V. Selvaganesh and Padma Bhushan Vikku Vinayakram. He speaks about his tryst with music and his musical heritage in 'Inner Voice #7'.

The video features Swaminathan speaking about his foray into music, sharing how he realized that being a part of such a prominent musical family is a huge privilege. He talks about his grandfather who is also his guru, saying, “He is a very strict teacher as well as a grandfather to me. But he slaps me with a wooden scale on my fingers if I play a wrong note.” He also explains the meaning of 'Konnakal' which is the art of singing percussion syllables vocally in South Indian music. “It's just like a musical language. To know what we play we have to first memorise it, to play it we need to say it,” he says.

He had his first concert at the age of 12 at the iconic Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai. For Swaminathan, music is a unifying factor - a common language. He says, “Whatever the other musicians play we may not understand but we can still mingle with them. That is the power of music.”

The melodious rhythm of the instrument is a soothing experience for the listener along with Swaminathan's brilliant vocals. The video gives an insight into his life and his thoughts about his musical journey.
