Indian alternative music showcase at British Council

MUMBAI: Known for championing alternative music in India, Wild City, in collaboration with the British Council will present a showcase of Indian electronica in the Capital on 4 July.

Titled ‘British Council and Wild City presents: Alternative India’ the triple-bill will feature Bengaluru-based trip-hop duo Sulk Station, Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Nicholson and experimental electronica producer Curtain Blue from Delhi, and is designed to showcase the new performance space the cultural institution is launching soon. Bengaluru-based filmmaker and visual artist Vandana Menon’s visuals will complement the music.

This showcase of Indian electronica also recently travelled to the UK in May where it was received well by both fans and the press.

Rob Lynes, director, British Council India, says, “This showcase travelled to the UK in May with performances at London’s Southbank Centre and the Great Escape festival in Brighton. It rightfully reflects India’s growing interest in alternative culture and the role that the UK music scene plays in shaping music sensibilities in India. The UK tour saw the Indian acts perform in Brighton, London, Bristol and Glasgow and presented to an international audience a true picture of the emerging, vibrant alternative music scene in India.”

“Following the overwhelming response to our four-city tour in the UK, we are excited to present the showcase on home turf in Delhi. We’re also really excited at the prospect of taking experimental electronica into a seated environment in Delhi. It will really change the experience for both fans and artists,” say Sarah and Munbir Chawla, founders of Wild City.
