Primitiv's haunting single 'Lords of Primitiv' makes its way into Metallers Mayhem compilation

MUMBAI: Mumbai based old school metal band Primitiv is more a super-band, for all its members have been veterans in the scene for years, before forming the band in 2013. While Nitin Rajan (vocalist) has been the vocalist for one of the premiere death metal bands called Morticide, and later thrash metal band Sledge, Riju Dasgupta (primary songwriter and bassist) is a part of the critically acclaimed band Albatross. The other members include Rajarshi Bhattacharya (guitars), Pushkar Joshi (drums), Kiron Kumar (drums) of Hellwind and Avirath Kadam for live guitars. Rajan also doubles as a gig organiser of Domination Deathfest and along with Dasgupta – Metal at the Tavern.

After releasing their first single 'Taurus' almost a year ago, the concept band has come up with a brand new single called 'Lords of Primitiv'. While 'Taurus' was heavy and gritty, 'Lords of Primitiv' is more melodious and intense with strikingly haunting lyrics. After two singles that have been well received by metal-heads and gained them some recognition as a band, they are planning to put out an album next year. Rajan said that they already have four songs ready and two are in the making. With probably eight songs in total, Primitiv will launch a full-fledged album after performing a number of live gigs.

The principal concept maker of the band Dasgupta undoubtedly gives the group's music its strong edge with interesting story-telling. In 'Lords of Primitiv', they sing about a dystopian, post apocalyptic future (Primitiv), where people are rediscovering the ways of the past and in the process unleash monsters, who become the lords of the planet called Primitiv.

The complex and intricate content that the band weaves is impressive and they support the stories with powerful vocals by Rajan and some classy old school instrumentation. The band has been performing live for a while now with original compositions like 'Lake Rancid', 'Demon of Science' and the two singles – all of which are separate episodes of a common plot.

Rajan said, "Riju is very fond of dystopian games and reads a lot about plots and stories. It is all about story telling for us, which is mostly fantasy oriented. We are primitive in the sense that we want our music to be older than old-school metal."

He added, "It is an amalgamation of all the genres that we are influenced by – death metal, heavy metal, power metal and extreme metal – our music is a melting pot of all of these and the stories drive the kind of sound we wish to create."

The band very recently performed at the Grand Mammoth Fest and Metal at the Tavern. Besides, Metallers Mayhem, a compilation album of the best metal releases of the year has also listed 'Lords of Primitiv' alongside tracks by bands like Undying Inc, The Down Troddence and other great metal bands.
