One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer are big winners at EMAs 2014

MUMBAI: The 2014 MTV European Music Awards (EMAs) took place in Glasgow on 9 November at the SSE Hydro. The show kicked-off by transporting viewers back to 1994, where a young Nicki Minaj watched the first-ever MTV EMA from her bedroom before travelling into the future, making a grand entrance into the 2014 MTV EMA in a frilled ball gown. The Grammy Award nominated singer took home the award for Best Hip Hop, and performed a few hits including ‘Super Bass’, ‘Anaconda’ and a debut performance of her new track ‘Bed of Lies’, which featured a surprise appearance by Skylar Grey.

The biggest winner on the night was UK pop band- One Direction, which won awards for Best Live, Best Pop and Biggest Fans, while Australian rock-pop band- 5 Seconds of Summer took home two awards for Best New and Best Push. The award for Best Male went to Justin Bieber, while Katy Perry's 'Dark Horse' took the Best Video award. American rockers- Linkin Park won for Best Rock, while Thirty Seconds to Mars won for Best Alternative, and Chinese singer- Bibi Zhou took home the Worldwide Act award. Enrique Iglesias won the Best World Stage EMA, and Beyonce's 'Pretty Hurst' won the EMA for Best Song with a Message.

Legendary rock band U2 performed at the MTV EMA stage for the fourth time with their song, ‘Every Breaking Wave’, accompanied by a strings section. There were also performances by Ariana Grande, who won the Best Song and Best Female Award, and Ed Sheeran, who performed his latest release ‘Thinking Out Loud’ with an elaborate music box.

Other performers at the event included British songstress Charli XCX, who sang hits- 'Boom Clap' and 'Break The Rules', while UK rock duo Royal Blood played 'Figure It Out' in front of a two-storey wall of screaming fans in the middle of the auditorium. Meanwhile Best World Stage winner Enrique Iglesias called on the crowd to be part of his medley of 'Freak' and 'Bailando'.

Rock legend Ozzy Osbourne returned to MTV to accept this year's Global Icon Award. In a surprise closing performance, Biffy Clyro's Simon Neil joined guitar legend Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators to pay tribute to Ozzy with an epic rendition of his classic hit 'Crazy Train'.

Before closing out the evening, Nicki Minaj announced that the 2015 MTV EMA will take place in Milan, Italy at the Mediolanum Forum onSunday, 25 October 2015.
