'Montage of Heck', Dave Grohl, Katy Perry and more music get Emmy nods

MUMBAI: ‘Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck’, the documentary on Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain has scored seven nominations at the 67th Emmy Awards. The critically acclaimed film is nominated for Outstanding Documentary for Non-Fiction Special. Oscar nominee Brett Morgan, who wrote, produced and directed the film, has been nominated for Outstanding Writing for Non-Fiction Programming and Outstanding Directing for Non-Fiction Programming. The film also earned creative Emmy nominations for Cinematography, Picture Editing, Sound-Editing and Sound Mixing.

Dave Grohl, frontman of American rock band Foo Fighters, has earned Emmy nominations for the first time, for his ‘rockumentary’ series ‘Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways’. The ‘Everlong’ singer has been nominated in two categories- Outstanding Direction for Non-Fiction Programming, and Outstanding Informational Series or Special with the series’ production team. The HBO special series, which features veteran musicians like Dolly Parton, Gary Clark Jr., Paul Stanley, Joe Walsh and others, also scored creative Emmy nods for Sound-Editing and Sound-Mixing.

Another musician to score an Emmy nomination is pop singer Katy Perry, for her performance at the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show. Perry, along with the show’s EP and Supervising Producer, has been nominated for Outstanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Programme.

Meanwhile, the 57th Grammy Awards scored three creative Emmy Awards. The award show, which is the music industry’s most prestigious, was hosted by LL Cool J this year, and scored nods for Production Design, Sound-Mixing and Lighting Design/Direction. The 57th Grammy Awards will face competition from singing reality TV show American Idol, which has also been nominated in the Lighting Design/Direction category, for its Finale episode.

Music director, Greg Phillinganes has been nominated for an Emmy in the Music Direction category for ‘Stevie Wonder: Songs in the Key of Life - An All-Star GRAMMY Salute.’

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony will be held on 12 September and the Primetime Emmy Awards will be held on 20 September in Los Angeles.
