Kavita Krishanmurthy: I personally would not like my voice to be too auto tuned

MUMBAI: Rendering her vocals to the most soul stirring tracks like 'Albela Sajan Ayo Re', from 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', to  something as peppy as 'Mera Piya Ghar Aaya' from the movie 'Yaaarana', Kavita Krishnamurthy has truly been a veteran in the music industry. Having collaborated with musicians like RD Burman and AR Rahman, the 57 year old is a musical gem who has bagged accolades for her vocals not just in Bollywood, but in other regional languages too. Over the years the only thing that has achieved permanence is her distinctive voice. Even when she talks, every word sounds like a musical note.

Having witnessed an era of change, the singer opined that the packaging of music differs now.  "The production of the song has changed. The music is now more of a singer songwriter style and has a lot of western pop influences. We would sing in proper Hindi, but today the singers have their own way of even pronouncing lyrics, and people are accepting that. We all followed the Lataji and Ashaji style, but singers today have their own style," she explained. Her favourites in the year 2014, included tracks like, 'Samjhawa', from the film 'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya', 'Muskurane' from 'Citylights', Zehnaseeb', from 'Hasee Toh Phasee' and a few more.

According to her, excessive auto tuning is something that really does not allow you to judge the quality of the singer's voice and the singer and the songs end up being similar. "I am a little old fashioned. The music back then was more of a 'geet' like 'Jaye Toh Jaye Kaha', which has now become a rarity. The songs then were very acoustic and were presented in a manner in which singers would usually sing with a tinge of reverb. But today a lot of sounds are produced and excessive auto tuning does not churn out the real emotions of songs, and one cannot judge the singer properly," elaborated the 'Hawa Hawai' singer.

Having worked with so many music composers, Krishnamurthy really does not have any preferences as long as she gets her creative freedom. "Personally I do not have any preferences working with anyone. Because today even the concept of someone being 'established' has vanished.  A new composer could do wonders and so I have no preferences whatsoever. But whoever I work with, I would not want my voice to be too auto tuned and the song should match my tonal quality," she further added.

Being a classical music aficionado, she also liked the compositions of Jeet Gannguli for 'Citylights' as the songs in the film are based on classical music. "The song 'Sone Do' was based on rag and overall the album is extremely good," she added, signing off.
