Music Festival: Banganga cancelled, Mumbai Sanskruti in

MUMBAI:Indian Heritage Society (IHS) is organizing 'Mumbai Sanskruti' a two-day music festival on the steps of heritage site 'Town Hall' at  on 7and 8 March, 2009. The festival is an effort to increase awareness of the rich culture and heritage of the city. The first day will see performance by vocalist Rashid Ali Khan where as the second day will feature contemporary classical musicians like Niladri Kumar, Selva Ganesh, Sivamani and Louis Banks.

Big FM makes key appointments in Western region

MUMBAI: Big FM has appointed Nikhil Mehta as Regional Sales Director – West and Vivek Mahajan as Head - SME and new business development. Mehta will be heading sales for the West region, including New Business Development in key markets and will be reporting into National Sales Head Pankaj Chandra. Vivek Mahajan, who has been appointed as Head – SME and New Business Development, Maharashtra, will be responsible for bringing in new advertisers to radio, while creating innovative properties for Clients  Mahajan will report to Nikhil Mehta.

Real to roll out music reality show Sitaron Ko Choona Hai

MUMBAI: Real, the newly launched Hindi entertainment channel will launch a music talent show, �Sitaron Ko Choona Hai' from 9 March. The musical show will be aired every Monday to Thursday at 8 pm. Sitaron Ko Choona Hai will look out for performers and would judge singers not only for their singing skills, but stage presence and performance as well. The show will witness 12 participants contesting to win the best singer title and they would be groomed and styled by the mentors, much like producers Miditech's earlier effort, Fame Gurukul.

Sourabhee Debbarma is first female 'Indian Idol'

MUMBAI: Popular music reality show Indian Idol finally got its first female winner in its fourth edition in the form of Sourabhee Debbarma, who won the grand finale in Mumbai on Sunday night. 22 year old Sourabhee, who hails from Tripura, belted out popular numbers confidently and piped other finalists - Bengali girl Torsha Sarkar and army man Kapil Thapa.

Rahman to perform at Thiruvananthapuram concert

MUMBAI: Now that A R Rahman has done what no music director in India has achieved in years, a long festival of sorts is in the making to celebrate his Oscar win. Rahman would be visiting Thiruvananthapuram on 14 April (Vishu, Kerala new year) for a benefit concert for the rehabilitation of AIDS-afflicted children at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium as part of non-profit social organization Global Kerala Initiative. This charity show will be part of A R Rahman's world tour.

Maharashtra govt sanctions Rs 20 mn to promote classical music

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government plans to start an three music festival named after Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, to be held at three venues annually, including Mumbai. State minister for cultural affairs Harshvardhan Patil on Thursday announced several initiatives in the field of Indian classical music, including the establishment of a gurukul to teach the Kirana gharana style, a cash award for stalwarts and a festival name after Joshi.
