A R Rahman launches online store

MUMBAI: After launching his own music label in 2006, Oscar winning composer A R Rahman has now launched his own online shop. The A R Rahman Store, on his official website (www.arrahman.com) presently sells seven items, but says it plans to expand the inventory to include exclusive presale tickets, merch, DVDs and more.... But currently one can only shop with Canadian Dollars, Euros, British Pounds, and US Dollars.

VH1 makes docu series on American Idol winner

MUMBAI: VH1 will give viewers a close-up look into the complex, touching and surprisingly relatable life of recording artiste, actress and American Idol winner Fantasia in a eight-episode, 30-minute documentary series Fantasia For Real that is slated to premiere on 11 January next year. The series follows the actress as she juggles her career and single-motherhood while devoting her energy into recording her third album.

Apple snaps up internet music site Lala.com

MUMBAI: Apple has bought internet music site Lala.com for an undisclosed amount, a development that could lead to the addition of streaming songs and new payment systems at Apple's iTunes, the world's biggest music retailer. According to a report in the Financial Times, Apple has confirmed the deal but declined to say what it would do with Lala, which currently allows users to listen to any song or album once without paying.

Rolling Stone to launch restaurant in LA

MUMBAI: Music and pop culture magazine Rolling Stone is getting into the food business, announcing plans Friday to launch a themed chain starting with a Hollywood restaurant, bar and lounge. Some 15 million tourists are estimated to stroll through the center each year. The bi-monthly magazine, which counts some 13 million readers, has already delved into video games and book publishing.In a bid to bring to life the essence of the iconic music magazine, the new venue will shun typical rock memorabilia already found in places like the Hard Rock Cafe.

Neeraj Saraswat is Fever FM Kolkata station head

MUMBAI: Fever FM has roped in Neeraj Saraswat as its station head, Kolkata. He will be reporting to Fever FM national marketing head Neeraj Chaturvedi who was till now handling the responsibility of the Kolkata station. Says Chaturvedi, "Saraswat has joined Fever FM as Kolkata station head. The Fever Kolkata station is the youngest among all our stations and it's an important station for us. With Saraswat on board, our primary focus will be to take Fever FM's market share in Kolkata to double digits very soon."

Reliance Media World debuts on bourses

MUMBAI: Reliance Media World listed  on the exchanges today. The company is part of Reliance Mediaworks which was formerly known as Adlabs Films. At 10:38 am, the stock was trading at Rs 139 on NSE. On the BSE,  Reliance Media World listed at Rs 89.75. The stock is currently trading at Rs 138.50, down from a high of Rs 145. The stock has seen a low of Rs 59 since opening.

MySpace debuts in UK

MUMBAI: More than after a year of its launch in US, music site MySpace has now entered the UK market. The major recording companies' joint venture with News Corp. unit MySpace rolls out Thursday in the social networking site's largest overseas market and its third country outside the U.S. MySpace Music launched in Australia and New Zealand in October after its U.S. debut in September 2008. The site, which helped launch the careers of Lily Allen and Kate Nash, claims it has "the most comprehensive catalogue" on the internet.

IMImobile laps up first European music deal with Meteor

MUMBAI: IMImobile has been selected by Irish operator Meteor to power its full track music download service. This deal will offer 1.4 million DRM free tracks across PCs and mobile handsets and share music across any device. IMI has been expanding into Europe over the last 12 months and Meteor is the first European mobile operator customer for IMImobile  The service is available immediately and is compatible with 1,500 handsets. The library is drawn from 2,000 independent labels, EMI, Sony BMG, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group.
