Jasleen Royal and Radhika Madan team up for a unique rendition of Lata Mangeshkar’s Lag Jaa Gale

MUMBAI: The young and versatile composer, singer and lyricist Jasleen Kaur known for her Bollywood compositions as much as for her independent music is gearing up for her maiden lockdown collaboration with Angrezi Medium actress Radhika Madan who coincidentally also will be making her first professional appearance in a musical showcase playing the keyboard.

A soulful rendition of the Lata Mangeshkar’s classic ‘Lag Jaa Gale’, the reinterpreted track crafted during COVID-19 is an extension of the evergreen classic by Madan Mohan Kohli and Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, written for the 1964 Bollywood film Woh Kaun Thi

Jasleen Royal who recently dropped the music video of Gully boy’s Jahaan Tu Chala video and dedicated it to mental health awareness states, “We picked Lag Jaa Gale specifically since it is a deep-dyed classic that is a favourite of millions and continues to delight listeners of all ages. Radhika enjoys playing the keyboard on and off and because of the lockdown she had some spare time and she sent me some of her sample videos of her jamming on some chords. I had an accordion which I had kept away for years which I removed and started curating the introduction. We started exchanging notes on how we wanted the introduction to the track to be and since it is an evergreen classic, we didn’t want to interfere much with the soundscape. Infact one of the supplementary sounds we have used for organic texturing is the sweet chime of the trinkets which Radhika had purchased from Udaipur during her Angrezi Medium. For the video we got our respective houses to assist us with the shooting and in a fortnight, we were ready with the final edit.”

Radhika Madan who recently showcased her aptitude for music under lockdown when she effortlessly plays the title track of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil on the keyboard adds, “I love music and learning an instrument has always been on my bucket list. I chose to pursue piano during this lockdown. I have been practicing and trying to perfect that craft. Lag Jaa Gale was a song that I could and can resonate with this at this point. Everything is so uncertain that you don't know what is in store for you tomorrow. Jasleen saw my pictures and videos during this lockdown as I played the piano we just thought why not collaborate and do something exciting. It's been lovely collaborating with her and she has been extremely helpful and has guided me through the entire piece with keys and chords and the overall conceptualization.”

Jasleen’s journey from India’s Got Talent to Bollywood has been incredible and a noticeable one. Having recorded for Hindi, Punjabi, Gujrati and English language songs, she won the Best Indie Song Award at the MTV Video Music Awards for her debut track Panchhi Ho Javan. This song was based on the poem written by Shiv Kumar Batavi. She has also released other singles like Din Shagna Da and Maye Ni. She has also recorded a reprise version of Amar Drawing Khata from the Bengali movie Chhaya O Chhobi.

Preet from Khoobsurat marked her maiden innings in the Bollywood film music industry. Some of her famous contributions to Bollywood include Jahaan Tu Chala from Gully Boy, Deh Shiva from Kesari, Love You Zindagi from Dear Zindagi, Raatein from Shivaay, Badla Badla from Badlapur, Nach De Ne Saare and Kho Gaye Hum Kahan from Baar Baar Dekho, Laaj Sharam from Veere Di Wedding, Din Shagna Da from Phillauri and many more.
