What India listened to on Spotify in 2019

MUMBAI: What a stellar year of streaming Spotify has seen in India! With 2019 drawing to a close, Spotify decided to take a look at who and what India listened to over, and over, and over again ever since its launch earlier this year.

2019 was a great year for Arijit Singh, who claimed the top spot among most-streamed artists on Spotify in India. We were also thrilled to see Tanishk Bagchi, Dhvani Bhanushali and Asees Kaur occupy the top three positions in the list of top breakout* artists from India, with fans gained across the world. Among international artists, users streamed Post Malone extensively, making him the only non-Indian artist to feature in the country's top-streamed artists list in 2019.

This year’s most-streamed song on Spotify in India is Señorita, by the couple that took the summer by storm - Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello, followed by Kabir Singh’s Tujhe Kitna Chahne Lage by Arijit Singh & Mithoon, and Bekhayali by Sachet Tandon and Parampara Thakur. Speaking of Kabir Singh, it's also the album that won Indian hearts, and is the most-streamed album on Spotify in the country.

Much of the music trends also indicate that Indian listeners' moods this year were defined by love and chill, with love being India’s top mood, based on the (state-wise) consumption of Spotify’s mood-themed playlists. The top love-themed playlists include Bollywood Mush and Warm Fuzzy Feeling, and popular chill-themed ones include Bollywood Acoustic and Chill Tracks.

Speaking of playlists, the ones that got India jamming this year were ones that comprised the best of the year AND the decade gone by - Today’s Top Hits, followed by All Out 10s, Top Hits Hindi, and New Music Hindi.

2019 was also a massive year for podcast growth on Spotify. Leading the way in India is On Purpose with Jay Shetty, the most-streamed podcast on Spotify in the country, and has also been #1 on Spotify’s India podcast chart since the time of launch.

Second on the list is VIEWS with David Dobrik and Jason Nash, followed by The Misfits Podcast. In line with this, the most consumed podcast genres of 2019 in the country were Society and Culture, Comedy and Business. Spotify also recently announced platform-exclusive podcasts from India, including cricket centric 22 Yarns with Gaurav Kapur, fiction thriller Bhaskar Bose narrated by Mantra, and love and relationship advice-based Love Aaj Kal with Aastha and Ankit, all of which are now live on the platform.
