Classical music essential, says Neeti Mohan

MUMBAI: Singer Neeti Mohan, who has not only sang in different styles, but also wants to continue experimenting talks about the importance of classical music for a singer.

Mohan, who is trained in classical music explains, “Yes, it is essential for singers to learn classical music. Earlier, it was mandatory even for actors to learn classical music and dance in the South film industry. Also, in the West, actors have to learn about music and playing instruments and dance. They are so much related because when standing on a stage, you cannot just have a bad posture and sing. You should have a stance and dancing acts to it. You will, therefore, get more grace in your body and can feel the movement more and then can sing better. It’s all about going deeper into that form of art.”

The Jiya Re singer’s explanation was indeed informative.

The singer had earlier revealed that her classical training had taught her to approach a song in different octaves when Amitabh Bachchan and a leading portal found her voice outstanding. While the former described that the singer has the right type of jazz sensibilities with a touch of Hindustaniyat, the latter called her voice high pitched with a raw vocal structure.

Meanwhile, Neeti Mohan is also trained in Bharatnatyam and Kathak, which explains why she rocks as an overall performer.
