Roopkumar Rathod's daughter Reewa launches new song with blessings of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar

MUMBAI: Almost every musician in India has a dream to meet Lata Mangeshkar at least once in the lifetime and there are some who are blessed by her in person. Reewa Rathod, daughter of Roopkumar Rathod and Sunali Rathod and a gifted singer in her own right falls in the second category. But what made the nightingale bless and recommend the young singer? The reason was the launch of Reewa’s new song-Sanwal.

Reewa, who has been a known name in the indie music segment, has explored multiple genres of music, explains what so special about her song Sanwal, “The song Sanwal is a thumri originally sung by Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, who is my idol. I have tried to present the composition in my way. I have added a Spanish touch and tried to make this version more relatable to this generation. When Lataji heard the song and me singing two-three months ago, she appreciated that someone from this generation is practising this genre of music too. I don’t know what to say as I am speechless after been recommended by the legend herself! I feel blessed.”

Lata Mangeshkar has been an idol for many singers and Reewa articulates why she is an inspiration, “She is a perfectionist.”

What makes the track more special for Reewa is that tabla legend Ustad Zakir Hussain has produced the music, “Again it’s a dream come true. I got to know that he would be producing the music after I recorded the song. I am truly honoured to have got an opportunity to work with him. Along with Zakirji, Micheal Mennart has co-produced the song and world-famous Saxophonist Chris Potter has also played for this track.”

Reewa is blessed with a legacy where her father, mother, uncles and grandfather all have been a part of Indian music fraternity at large. Her grandfather being a dhrupad legend and mother father practising Indian musicians. Reewa, on the other hand, has explored multiple genres of world music along with Indian forms. Reewa says that it is her choice, “I had an inclination to learn all types of music. I am glad that my parents encouraged me to for learning every type of music.”

Reewa’s previous release was the song ‘Maula’, which was written by Gulzar and her next album too is with him. Adding Reewa says, “It’s an album with six songs and the vibe is romantic.” Apart from that, she is also coming up with two tracks for Buddha Bar.”

Considering her father Roop Kumar Rathod has given some of the amazing songs for Hindi Film Music, questions about her Bollywood singing career are inevitable, although she is clear of what she is looking for, “Right now I want to focus on my next album. I am open for Bollywood but the opportunity has to be really amazing for me to take it.”
