I was and still am a big Sonu Nigam fan: Jonita Gandhi

MUMBAI: Sonu Nigam has been a favourite singer for every generation. Since he began his career till today, the songs he offers will make anybody fall for his melodious voice. One such fan moment was shared on the sets of Saavn’s Talking Music by YouTube sensational Jonita Gandhi.

It was 2009 when Jonita first got a chance to meet Sonu Nigam. “So when Michael Jackson passed away Sonu Nigam wanted to do a tribute and he wanted to include his fans and include people from across the globe. So, he set out a contest on his (Sonu Nigam’s) fan page saying ‘we’re looking for people to participate; I want this to be a fan-made video.’ It was supposed to be like a fan tribute. He asked people to submit their videos of singing and I actually found out about this contest late, just the day before they closed the contest and they had announced the six winners,” said the Gilehriyaan singer.

“So, by that time I had already sent in my submission. I knew the submissions were closed but requested them to just show him my video. I told them that Sonu just viewing my video would make me happy.  So, they responded a couple of days later saying that somebody was opting out and they were selecting me. I was like OMG!! Sonu Nigam knows who I am,” she further added.

She then shared her fan moment of meeting Sonu Nigam in person. “In 2011 I did an online video, an NRI contest where Sonu ji and Suresh Wadekar ji were judges and the finale took place in New Jersey. That was the first time I ever saw Sonu Nigam in person. I remember my knees were shaking; I was and still am a big Sonu Nigam fan. He remembered me, he was like 'oh yes Gandhi, you were a part of the MJ Tribute' and I was just so thrilled that he remembered me.”

Jonita was way too lucky even the next year. The Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin singer was all set for his North America tour for which he required a female singer. “The promoter suggested my name and Sonu ji also said ‘oh I know who that is, sure let’s have her on board’. This was in Toronto when I hadn’t even come to India to seek opportunities yet.  And that’s how I went on a tour with Sonu Nigam,” shared the excited Jonita.

Talking about her future projects, the singer wishes to focus on her YouTube channel from where she is known to people. She also believes YouTube gives her the freedom to do whatever she feels like which is great.

“So the scene currently is along with film music, independent music is getting a little more attention. Recently I did an English song with this producer Anish Sood, called Castle. We shot in Turkey and I had so much fun doing that. I feel there is so much that can be done especially now when people are noticing more non-film songs. It’s an exciting time for sure. I want to record more film songs and there are so many music directors I’ve not worked with yet that I really want to work with. I want to start doing more fun music videos, incorporate more storyline,” ended the Breakup Song singer.
