Sourav Roy's journey from Kolkata to Mumbai

MUMBAI: Moving to the city of dreams to pursue a career in music has been a memory full of struggle for every musician in the industry today. But this is not the story for Sourav Roy who moved to Mumbai a decade ago from West Bengal to embrace his talent in music on a bigger platform.

Being a music producer from the native, Roy started working with big names in the Bollywood music industry. He began with background scoring for many films, while his first project as a producer was Kidnapp with composer Raju Singh, today, we see him working with big composers like Amit Trivedi, Pritam, Amaal Malik,Vishal–Shekhar, Meet Bros and more.

“Back in Kolkata, I was already producing for the music industry there. I was also playing musical instruments with renowned artiste like Tanmay Bose, Vikram Ghose and more. Working as a producer in Kolkata added value and thus coming to Mumbai and producing scores and music wasn’t a big task for me,” said Sourav.

While he was working for Amit Trivedi’s film as a background score, he got an opportunity to create music for Ishaqzaade’s title track, Ishqzaade.

Ishaqzaade was a smasher. Those days I was working with Trivedi for many background scores and he one day asked me to produce a song. He asked me for something out of the box and this (Ishaqzaade’s title track) is what I came up with. Bollywood that time was coming up with many peculiar styling songs and that is what we wanted to break with this song,” said Roy.

Getting back to how it all began, Roy came from a musical family in a small town called Asansol in West Bengal where his mother was a singer and father was a tabla player along with working in the government sector.

At a very early age following his father’s footstep, he started playing tabla. But at the age of 14 due to health problems he gave up playing but couldn’t stay away from music. So, he started playing synthesizer and keyboards. His first tutor was Late Deepak Roy who was not only a teacher but an inspiration for Sourav. Later he travelled all the way to Kolkata to learn from Sam Engineer and gave an entrance exam at Trinity College of music.

Amongst all the composers that he has worked with, there is one man whom he gives all the credits for his achievements. “Raju Singh is a big figure to me; I started my career in Bollywood with him. He was the one who trusted me. He knew that I could deliver good work. Also, the other composers I have worked with are equally important to me as they have kept faith in me and so I am here today,” Sourav concluded.

His recent projects include RACE 3, Sanjay Dutt Biopic, Sonu Ke Titu ki Sweety, Aiyaary and more.
